On Naming a Street of Port Louis in Honour of Yuri Gagarin

On February 17, 2020, the Municipal Council of the Republic of Mauritius supported the initiative of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Mauritius and named one of the streets in “Les Salines” garden in honour of the first soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.

In November 2019, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Mauritius organized the exhibition dedicated to the achievements of Soviet and Russian cosmonautics, which took place in the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin.

The exhibition attracted great interest among the local community and contributed to the strengthening of Russia’s positive image on the island. In view of this fact, the Embassy is currently working through the issue of the installation of a bust of Yuri Gagarin in the above-mentioned park in 2021. As is known, in 2019 the Embassy also installed a bust of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin in the same place.
