On the ceremony of inauguration of the bust to Alexander Pushkin in Mauritius

On the 8th of April 2019 in one of the capital’s parks, the Russian Embassy in Mauritius organized the ceremony of inauguration of the bust to Alexander Pushkin –an exact copy of the original work of the famous Soviet sculptor Mr.M.Anikushin.

The event was held with the participation of the Minister of Arts and Culture of the Republic of Mauritius the Honourable Mr.P.Roopun, the Lord Mayor of Port Louis His Lordship Mr.D.Laurent, the Chief Executive of the Port Louis Municipal Council Mr.J.Mulloo, the Director of the European Department of the Mauritian Foreign Ministry Mr.A.Koodoruth. Moreover, the Director of the National Library of Mauritius Mrs.B.Ramnauth, the Director of the Rajiv Ghandi Science Centre Mr.A.Maulloo, the President of the “Opera Mauritius” Foundation Mr.P.Olsen, the Executive Chairman of Holdem Holdings Ltd Mr. J.Appavoo, the Director of the Super Construction Ltd. Mr.B.Wong, the President of the Association of Mauritian Graduates from Soviet and Russian Universities “MAURUSS” Mr.R.Radhay and the President of the Coordinative Council of Russian Compatriots in Mauritius Mrs.O.Bogacheva were present as well.

The event was covered by correspondents of the Mauritius Broadcating Corporation and several leading newspapers.

The ceremony was opened by the Russian Ambassador to Mauritius. He explained that the installation of the bust became possible thanks to the support of the Director of the Russian National Pushkin Museum Mr.S.Nekrasov and is timed to the 220th anniversary of the Great Russian poet, which will be widely celebrated around the world. The Ambassador spoke about the role and place of Pushkin's works in the world literature and noted that the great poet's appeals to freedom, humanism, his odes of love, friendship still find echoes in the hearts of people of different nationalities. The head of the Russian diplomatic mission expressed confidence that the installation of the monument to Pushkin in Mauritius will provide an excellent opportunity for the residents of this wonderful island to get closer and deeper acquainted with the works of the great Russian poet, which will undoubtedly make an important contribution to strengthening friendship and understanding between the peoples of Russia and Mauritius. Special words of gratitude were addressed to the sponsors of the project, among whom were both Russian and Mauritian businessmen and public figures.

In his speech, the Lord Mayor of Port Louis Mr.D.Laurent expressed his gratitude to the Russian Embassy in Mauritius for the initiative to install the monument and assured of the readiness of the capital’s Municipal Council to continue supporting such projects.

The Minister of Art and Culture of the Republic of Mauritius the Hon. Mr.P.Roopun made a speech. He told the guests about the historically friendly nature of Russian-Mauritian versatile ties and shared his vivid memories of the Russian cultural week, which was held in March 2018 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the bilateral diplomatic relations between Russia and Mauritius. The Minister reiterated the willingness of the Mauritian side to continue to support the Embassy in the implementation of cultural activities.

After the opening of the monument, which took place under the hot applause of the audience, the poem "I remember a wonderful moment" by Alexander Pushkin in Russian, French and Creole languages was read by the students of the local French Lyceum "La Bourdonnais". A Mauritian graduate from the Russian Academy of Sciences, writer and poet, Mr.S.Seetohul presented its translation into Creole of a passage of the play of A.Pushkin "Mozart and Salieri" and his own poem dedicated to this festive event.

After that, two children of Russian compatriots living permanently in Mauritius performed two Russian folk songs.

At the end of the ceremony, guests were offered classic dishes of traditional Russian cuisine.
