On the opening ceremony of the “Russia Corner” in the National Library of Mauritius

On the 12th of September 2019 the Russian Embassy in Mauritius together with the National Library of Mauritius organized the opening ceremony of the “Russia Corner”. The event was held with the participation of the Minister of Arts and Culture of the Republic of Mauritius the Honourable P.Roopun. Several heads and members of diplomatic missions, representatives of the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre and Mauritian state bodies as well as the President of the Association of Mauritian Graduates from Soviet and Russian Universities “MAURUSS” Mr.R.Radhay and the President of the Coordinative Council of Russian Compatriots in Mauritius Mrs.O.Bogacheva were present as well.

The ceremony was opened by the welcoming address by the Director of the National Library Mrs. T.K.Ramnauth. She expressed gratitude to the Russian Ambassador in Mauritius for the initiative which made an important contribution to the enrichment of the institution’s collection.

The address of the Russian Ambassador to Mauritius has been read to the guests. The head of the Russian diplomatic mission expressed confidence that the section of Russian literature will be demanded among local population and will contribute to the professional growth of unique specialists learning Russian language. Furthermore, Ambassador reminded the guests about the projects of special importance recently organized in collaboration with Mauritian authorities in the cultural field (such as the opening of the bust to the Great Russian poet A.Pushkin in Port Louis in June 2019) and thanked the administration of the National Library of Mauritius and the Ministry of Arts and Culture of the Republic of Mauritius for support rendered to this project.

In his speech, the Minister of Arts and Culture of the Republic of Mauritius the Honourable P.Roopun told the guests about the historically friendly nature of Russian-Mauritian versatile ties and shared his vivid memories of the Russian cultural week, which was held in March 2018 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the bilateral diplomatic relations between Russia and Mauritius. The Minister reiterated the willingness of the Mauritian side to continue to support the Embassy in the implementation of cultural activities.

In total, the “Russia Corner” comprises 200 books of such world known Russian writers and poets as Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Tolstoy, Gogol, Turgenev, Fet and many others. Besides, it includes works of the Soviet period, books for children and items on culture and history of Russia. The opening of the Corner became possible thanks to the active support of the Russian Federal Agency “Russotrudnichestvo”.
Within the framework of the ceremony, Mauritian graduate from the Soviet Academy of Science Mr. Seetohul, writer and poet, presented several fragments of his proper translations of Pushkin’s works in creole language.

During the event, two Russian compatriots living in Mauritius Mrs. Olga Rogovaya and Mrs. Evanjelika Batarshina colorfully performed several Russian songs in traditional dresses.

The event was covered by correspondents of the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation and several leading newspapers.
